Waterbury Community Court Celebrates 5th Anniversary

The Community Court Session at Waterbury Superior Court will celebrate its 5th anniversary on Thursday, Oct. 20, 2005, in Courtroom 2B, 400 Grand St., Waterbury.

The celebration will begin at 2 p.m., when Superior Court Judge Salvatore C. Agati, administrative judge for the Waterbury Judicial District, welcomes guests. Speakers will include: Superior Court Judge Sheriden L. Moore, the first presiding judge of the Waterbury Community Court Session; Sen. Joan V. Hartley, 15th Senatorial District serving the towns of Waterbury, Naugatuck and Prospect; Superior Court Judge William T. Cremins, who recently served as presiding judge of the Waterbury Community Court Session; Waterbury Police Chief Neil O’Leary; and James Coviello, court planner for the Waterbury Community Court Session.

Waterbury Mayor Michael Jarjura will present a citation, and Chief Court Administrator Joseph H. Pellegrino then will make concluding remarks.

Community court is a partnership among the city of Waterbury, the state of Connecticut,  and the residents of Waterbury. The court addresses “quality of life” crimes and is committed to the concept of restorative justice for both the community and the defendant.

The Community Court Session in Waterbury started on Oct. 6, 2000. As of Sept. 30, 2005, it had handled a total of 9,630 cases with a total of 8,796 defendants. The Waterbury community has benefited from 77,542 community service hours at 560 work sites.
