Chief Justice McDonald
Appoints Judge Pellegrino as
Chief Court Administrator
HARTFORD - Chief Justice
Francis M. McDonald, Jr., announced today that he has appointed The Honorable Joseph H.
Pellegrino to be the Chief Court Administrator of the State of Connecticut Judicial
Branch. Judge Pellegrino has served as an Appellate Court Judge since March 2000. He
assumes the position previously occupied by Judge Robert C. Leuba, who retired on November
27, 2000. "Judge Pellegrino brings to the Chief Court Administator's office extensive
experience as a trial judge, administrative judge and appellate judge," said Chief
Justice McDonald. "He is sensitive to the needs of the trial court and will work with
the judges to meet the Branch's obligation to hear and resolve the cases brought by the
people of the state of Connecticut." "I am honored that the Chief Justice has
placed his confidence in me, and look forward to working with him and the next Chief
Justice to improve the courts for the benefit of the citizens of our state," said
Judge Pellegrino. Appellate Court Judge Joseph H. Pellegrino is a native of New Haven and,
with the exception of his college years, a lifelong resident of Connecticut. He graduated
from the University of Notre Dame with a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy in 1958 and earned
a Master of Arts degree in education from Fairfield University in 1961. He attended Boston
College Law School, where he received his Juris Doctor in 1963.
Upon his admittance to the Connecticut Bar
immediately following law school, he was in private practice in New Haven until 1990, when
he was appointed a Superior Court Judge. In May 1997 he was named Chief Administrative
Judge, Civil Division, and held that post until March 2000 when he was elevated to the
Appellate Court. A Fellow with the Connecticut Bar Foundation, Judge Pellegrino has served
as a member of the Executive Committee of the Superior Court and a member of the Superior
Court Rules Committee. Throughout his professional career, Judge Pellegrino has received
numerous awards, including the Connecticut Trial Lawyers Association's Judicial Award
(1996), the Connecticut Italian American Bar Association's Achievement Award (1998) and
the Honorable Robert C. Zampano Award for Excellence in Mediation from the Community
Mediation, Inc. (1998).
