• Services Provided: Policy advocacy. Legislative initiatives. Litigation, negotiation, mediation. Available to community organizations that wish to organize systemic policy work.

Connecticut Civil Liberties Union

• Mission: The CCLU is the Connecticut office of the American Civil Liberties Union. The CCLU engages in lobbying and public education in civil rights/civil liberties issues in Connecticut. Through the CCLU Foundation, the CCLU also handles affirmative civil rights and law reform litigation in state and federal court. Its litigation docket includes issues such as free speech, search and seizure, privacy, disability rights, criminal justice reform, drug testing, student rights, school desegregation, fair housing, church-state issues and lesbian and gay rights. Defendants are most often government agencies. The CCLU generally does not have staff to provide individual legal services to most prison inmates, victims of police misconduct or persons claiming employment discrimination. The CCLU works closely with other civil rights and legal services offices in Connecticut.

• Target Population: The CT Parent Advocacy Center, Inc., (CPAC) is a statewide nonprofit organization that offers information and support to families of children with any disability or chronic illness, age birth through 21.

• Services Provided: In addition to its work with families, CPAC conducts in-service presentations for schools, teachers-in-training and service providers throughout the state so that they may better understand and serve the parents with whom they work. Staff and Board members serve on numerous statewide committees and various organizations, representing issues that are of concern to parents and families in Connecticut.

National Center on Poverty Law
